es_systems.cfg empty!

After installing Kodi from the Retropie config menu, my raspberry won't boot and claims that my es_systems.cfg is gone. Cannot enter with ssh or by server access. Have tried to re-run RetroPie setup but without positive results. I have tons of roms loaded on to the Pi and i would be so sad to lose all of 'em. I'm not with my Pi at the moment and i do not know how to get the error log. Please help.

@meleu I am by default. It has been some time now, but i think i disabled the User/password function. I'm able to do functions like:
cd RetroPie-Setup
chmod +x retropie_setup.sh
sudo ./retropie_setup.sh -
@medicalengineer then try to reinstall emulationstation.

@meleu That's the weird thing. It says (installed) right next to Emulationstation. But could have another look at it.

@medicalengineer yeah! It can be installed but you lost the es_systems somehow. If you reinstall you'll get this file again (I hope).

@meleu I tried to install it again. No success :( In the process of installing Emulationstation it does not mention something about es_systems.cfg.

@medicalengineer do you have a file named es_systems.cfg.bak in /etc/emulationstation/ ? If so delete es_systems.cfg and rename the other one. (Remove the .bak)otherwise i believe you need to delete es_systems.cfg file then reinstall emulationstation.

@edmaul69 the es_systems.cfg is completly gone. Cannot find it on the Pi...

I've located the es_systems config file, but it is empty, so i have to write it manually.
I'm home safe for now. Everything seems to work. But now it's time to get Kodi working with my RetroPie.
Any useful exp? -

How were you able to find it to see it was empty, but not the location?
Anyway, the location above is where it belongs.

@3lric After hours of searching i found it by at: /opt/retropie/configs/all/emulationstation/es_systems.cfg
I opened it just to find instructions how to write the systems manually. -
that file will override the
/etc/emulationstation/es_systems.cfg- if you have a full config file in/etc/emulationstationand you don't want to manually "manage" it yourself - remove the one in/opt/retropie/configs/all/emulationstation/es_systems.cfg -
@BuZz uhm. I could have another look at it, but I didn't see any es_systems file in that directory. It is up and running with the es_systems i manually typed in some systems, and then updated trough RetroPie-Setup menu.

it should be unless it was removed/deleted. If you update all installed packages from the retropie-setup menu it will be recreated with the correct systems. You don't need to keep another copy unless you want to manually manage it.

Or someone could just upload the file for you to mv into the directory and solve your problem.

es_systems.cfg is dynamically generated now? So, if I install say lr-mess, then every machine supported by the mess core will be generated in the es_systems.cfg as a system?

@BuZz this reminds me, somehow my roms changed to root and not home. I had to give user pi permissions to /home/pi/ to be able to move back to that but the es_systems.cfg in /etc/ keeps setting the roms in root. Not a big deal because i manually manage my systems in opt but would like to fix it if possible.

@DrMaxwell No. I didn't say that. But if you have only 2 emulators installed, only the relevent systems will be set in that file.
