I just wanted to double check if an update with Retropie-setup from 4.6.x to 4.7.1 will work, or if I have to download and flash a new 4.7.1 image?

It should work, there's no need to download a new image, if you installed from the 4.6 image.

@arcuza From the announcement of RP 4.7.1:

If you have already installed the 4.7 image you don’t need to re-download. Just choose the “update” option from the main menu in RetroPie-Setup.

My 4.6 installation became 4.7 just by the normal update process, and I didn't notice any problems since then. However, I recommend a backup before doing that, see the Docs on updating about some different methods to do so.

@mitu Thank you. It’s not obvious from the news post regarding 4.7 that you’re able to do an inline update. There should be a suggested update path for existing installations.

(This is said with a happy voice :) )

@arcuza Generally, RetroPie can be always be kept up-to-date by updating it from the RetroPie-Setup script.
Probably that's why it's not mentioned explicitly in the release notes. One of the biggest exceptions to the rule is when the base image is using a Raspbian release and support for older image installs is no longer feasible/possible - but in this case (4.6 to 4.7), the base OS hasn't changed.

That being said, a lot of users probably aren't using the online update function and are looking for updates only on major releases, so yes, I can see why it would be useful to add this update info to release notes.

And as I just checked, it's 4.7.1 now. So yes, it went all the way from 4.6 to 4.7.1. 🙂
