Stuck on first hurdle writing image to sd card

So I am trying to setup the raspberry pie 400 today with retro pie but I'm stuck! I have downloaded the retropie file and I have tried to copy it to sd card using this guide.

However the file downloaded is not a zip file its an img. Gz file so it won't find it. I only have a chromebook so I'm currently stuck. Do I need a Windows machine to go further?

I might have done it... Converted img file to zip and its copied onto sd card I'll soon find out if it's worked

By "its copied" you mean by the Recovery Utility of ChromeOS, or copied manually by yourself to the formatted sd card as a file? The former may work while the latter most likely wouldn't.
However, please post your final result so others with the same problem might find the solution here. Thanks!

I copied the zip file using the chrome recovery utility but now I have a new problem.. All I am getting is a load of writing saying unable to read partition as FAT and loads of numbers going over and over in a loop

@chris3535 Maybe your downloaded file is corrupt. You can check its md5 checksum with this web tool and compare it to the md5 checksum listed under the download button for your Pi model on the RetroPie download page https://retropie.org.uk/download/
When doing so, be sure to check the md5sum of the original downloaded file before any processing / conversion to another format.
If the md5sums differ, download the file again. If they do match, extract the
.imgfile from the.gzfile and rename it to.binas suggested in the second answert to this question on askubuntu.com. If that still doesn't work, try the first answer there, but be very careful, as the commandddthat's used there (and as mentioned there, too) wipes any drive whose device name it is given. -
@clyde How do I extract the img file from the gz file, don't forget I'm only using Chromebook :-)

However it wasn't seeing it because it's not a zip file that downloads. So then I went into my files where the img.gz file is and pressed down on it and went to zip selection, it then after a few minutes turned it into a zip file and then using Google recovery utility I could write it to the SD card but then when I put it in the pi I got the screen as per you tube video

@chris3535 I am currently using raspberry pie imager on the pi itself and it says it's writing to SD card now so will report back

This is not what I told you. You should check the md5sum of your downloaded
gzfile, then extract theimgfile from it, then rename its extension from.imgto.bin, and then try to write it to the card with the Recovery Utility. -
@clyde you can't write it to SD card with recovery tool, it has to be a zip file for the recovery tool to see it

@clyde however I am hoping this raspberry pi imager is going to work it's nearly done veryfing it so fingers crossed

Did you try a
.binfile or how do you know that it won't work? At least the link I posted says that bin should work, but of course it could be wrong or outdated. I don't have ChromeOS myself, so I'm dependant on third-party information here.@chris3535 said in Stuck on first hurdle writing image to sd card:

@clyde mate I wasn't having a good I totally appreciate your and everybody else help..
I got it to work, the raspberry writter thing did the trick..I have hit another problem now as the Joystick won't work in any games but I'll start a new thread after I have taken a little break.

@clyde I just used the actual pi and hooked up a sd card reader to it then used the official raspberry pi image tool to write retro pie image to sd card
