@louf I always was taught that "Linux Is Not UniX", and that the I in 'is' is the same as the I in 'Linux'.

@louf Once you occupy yourself with Linux, you'll also come across the term GNU/Linux eventually. Here's how that is pronounced, and what it ultimately means:

Fun fact: "GNU" is a recursive acronym for "GNU's Not Unix".

That said, and without any intent to disrespect the praiseworthy people behind GNU, most GNU/Linux users I met in my 14 years of using it were absolutely fine with calling it just Linux. Because humans are inherently lazy. 😇

@crush Conveniently for us Germans, that's also the normal way to pronounce it (e.g. for the Wildebeest).

(edit: And I just read "Gnucon" when I saw Guncon 3 on Raspberry Pi in the list of unread topics. 😆 )

Don't forget WINE (WINE Is Not an Emulator) is another one.
Recursive acronym (or backronym) is a new one. I thought it would just be called a 'circular reference'. Probably my inner MS Excel geek showing through there.

@yfzdude I have to admit that I looked it up, because I forgot what it's called. 😁

I pronounced it linux for almost 15 years and then I hear my boss call it Line-ux and I started calling it Line-ux but I like linux pronounced lin-ux like linear or my counties dispatch center name lincom.
