FFIV:TCC hangs in ppsspp and lr-ppsspp

I've been following this thread to no avail. My rpi 3 has both lr-ppsspp and ppsspp installed from the sources, but whenever I try to load FFIV:The Complete Collection .iso, it hangs indefinitely at that black screen with the blue loading crystal in the lower left. Am I missing a step in expecting these emulators to run games out of the box, or is this game known not to work with the current build of those emulators?

UPDATE: RetroPie 4.7.11 seems to fix this.

....But not completely. I saved state during the "off to Mist village" intro animation and now the game never runs anymore, even after deleting the saved state and reinstalling the rom.
the logs show:

glGetError 0x500I'm mainly wondering if there's some other, deeper config besides the retroarch file in the ppsspp folder somewhere that got distorted by my save state.
