I got some video splash screens working in retropie, and can't seem to get the splash screen randomizer to work with them. I figure the randomizer only works with images. Is there a (sorta easy) way to get random videos working?

Nm... figured it out myself. The docs could use some help in this area. I did the following:

        1. place videos each in their own folder in .../screenshots/ (ie /video1/coolvid1.mp4, /video2/evencoolervid.mp4).

        2. Enable randomizer, and choose the 1st custom video from your list.

        3. 'Append splashcreens to list' to add the rest of your videos one by one.

        4. Save, exit, reboot, verify and enjoy!

@truglodite Cool you figured it out. The documents are community maintained so we all need to contribute if something is lacking.

Is this somenthing that affects only Retropie 4.6 on a Pi4?
I dont have one yet (issues with AV-Output and AdvanceMame made me say "No" atm), but with my Pi3B+ on Retropie 4.6 it is working much easier.

            • copy all your splashscreen-videos to "/splashscreens/" (i have them in *.mp4)
            • enable randomizer
            • select to use the default splashscreen-folder

            et voilà: works.
without creating any subfolders or anything else.

I am also having issues with the splash screen randomizer. It works once then never again upon any other startup.

@sirhenrythe5th (…and others having issues with random custom splash screen videos)

After freshly upgrading to the latest retropi image on both my pi3b+ and my pi4, I ran into this issue again and had to add one more step.

After appending all the desired videos to the list (separate folders in the ‘opt/retropi/supplementary/splashscreen’ folder), disable the randomizer if it is already enabled, enable the randomizer, and select ‘Randomize /etc/splash screens.list’. Now when I reboot both the pi3 and pi4, a random splashscreen plays properly every time.

I did try this with the splash screens placed in /home/pi/retropie/splashscreens but could not get it to work reliably no matter what I did. This is likely due to me having retropie on an sdcard and roms on a usb drive… the usb is often not ready early enough in the boot process for the videos to work. No mods to autostart.sh etc worked either. If you are doing full usb boot, it will probably work keeping the videos in your home splashscreen folder (moving them to the opt supplementary folder is more work anyways).
