Got the emulator for this super-obscure Soviet machine booting via MESS and got my WAV files to load, but I'm drawing a complete blank trying to find out what to actually type to load something. Anyone?

Raspberry Pi 3b and 8GB Raspberry Pi 4, both running Retropie 4.7.1 installed from scratch using Raspberry Pi Imager, with wired keyboard, wireless mouse and double arcade joystick attached.

For these older computers/consoles/portables/etc that are using the MESS component of MAME ... they can be tricky to find the right commands (especially the really obscure ones).

Other than hopefully finding some good webpages that might help, a couple of other good sources are the MAME files themselves.

This first link is an older MESS info dump .. but it's still useful. Scroll down (or find) the "bk0010" section for some useful commands to use for that system. I quickly glanced and see it has instructions on running a game.

Then, the second file, is the MAME hash file itself. Look in the bk0010.xml file and you'll see additional usage notes for things. In this case, you'll see what you would need to type in the "monitor" portion of the emulated system to load a game.

        MESS info file:

MAME hash file (on Libretro GITHUB page for lr-mame):
        https://github.com/libretro/mame/blob/master/hash/bk0010.xml

Hopefully, between those two files, you might get lucky to load a game!

@dmmarti Oh, that's an excellent find, thanks. It's a partial success - typing MO, then M, then the game name and then F2 to start the tape, certainly does something, but only one game actually starts so far (Tetris).

You also need to change Keyboard Mode in MESS from Emulated to Natural.

          Still, definite progress, cheers :)

@jimmyfromthebay If you manage to get enough information, you could create an article about the Elektronika in the "Emulators" section of the RetroPie Docs. See here for more about how to contribute to it. 😉

I've written up a couple of little tutorials here already, but that page is absolutely terrifying.

You'll want to use Commonmark Markdown and the reason for this is MkDocs' Python parsers handle Markdown flavours differently and it will choke on certain aspects of Github (or other) flavoured Markdown.

@JimmyFromTheBay The phrasing could be better, indeed. What it tries to tell you is just that you should format your text using only this syntax which is also used by this forum.

This reminded me of an episode from THE IT CROWD:
