Re: Where to (legally) acquire content to play on RetroPie

You should consult with your local national law regarding ownership and the transfer thereof. this information is intended for EU residents

First off, If you've ever owned a game* you can legally download digital copies as many times as you want from any source.

If you have family or close friends that has ever owned a game(collection) you have the right to be gifted the transfer of ownership (that includes the software).

You bought the rights to the physical fabrics and the compiled version of software inside it.

This is ironically not true for games and ROMs sold today, at least the details have changed and been updated (unfortunately for the benefit of the suppliers and oligopolies like Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo).

The laws that apply are therefore as at the time of ownership and the laws are transferred with the transfer of ownership.

E.g did your brother or cousin own a bookshelf of games you only need, in theoretical law, for that person to orally or in written form simply "gift" you the rights to them (thereby losing his).

Unless the ROM you're downloading is another release or platform, you do not need to worry about downloading games within the scope of your previous/transferred ownership rights.

It isn't, strictly speaking, any real or moral financial damage being done if you, by accident or from suffering of the human condition, theoretically broke copyright laws since there's likely no retail, active dev. or production team of employees to effectively steal from.

Many designers and previous release company workers have stated that they prefer open sharing over the "distasteful greed" shown by auctions taking advantage of this fact.

Remember that the law isn't absolutely,if it was we wouldn't allow international law to be broken by Kings, Oligarchs, Heads of State, et cetera, on a daily basis.

I merely state my opinions, hereby denounce all illegality regardless of the nature of the crime and circumstance. ;)

So in other words, this is all total BS?

@sleve_mcdichael No it isnt. I wrote that so moderation can skimm without having to deduce if I am breaking rules/guidelines.

I have a "Support The Piratebay" sticker. I do not condone breaking copyright law.
Politics can somehow confuse stand-alone content if you, as a writer, do not take steps in order to veil your stance.

It isn't piracy to do as I have done and explained in my article you can do as well.
