@Bastelbudde said in Selling Arcade Cabinets With Twister OS and RetroPie:

First of all, I wanted to find out whether it is allowed to sell a Pi with Retropie?

Not quite - see https://retropie.org.uk/about/legal/. The RetroPie image includes software with non-commercial license, so it's not legal to sell it or include it in your kit.

If not, could I sell a Pi without any software and send the customer instructions or a link?

You can sell the hardware (the arcade cabinet) and provide instructions on how it can be made to work with something like RetroPie or other Pi supported gaming system.

@saccublenda ah well done i could only find the Dutch press release cited in various articles as source.
The pdf also contains a link to the full text of the judgement.
And whilst new laws on the subject on the legality of downloaded media might differ in various EU countries, they all stem from the precedent set by this judgement.

@clyde And the Sega Megadrive & Genesis Classics where already mentioned/discussed in that thread more then once :P maybe it would be time to split that one into "collection of sources" and "announcements for sales" for items from "sources" %^]

      @herb_fargus
Thanks for the reply, I totally agree with you which is why this is somewhat in a gray area. As I said, I have seen the drama, it is hard to understand without really knowing if it is ok or not.

That site does offer versions not available to the public for the two higher tiers which I think is what is causing the issue. They claim to watermark the images so as to be able to identify them if leaked to the general public which makes no sense if it was available for free to all anyway.
Anyway, I don't and will not pay anything for Retropie. Using the base image is easy, and I have found that the biggest problem is people do not want to invest a little time to learn and build on a base image, yet they want support from others when the image does not work correctly.
It is sad that people try to act like they are not selling retropie when in reality, retropie is the only item they are offering and asking for Patreon support, and as far as I know it comes with roms, but I cannot say as I do not have the image. I guess it is just the nature of the beast...

There is a thread with a collection of sources for legal roms. It shows up as the fourth hit if you search the forum for "legal roms".

The people selling this particular unit are using Recalbox, not RetroPie. You can tell by the theme in the video they posted.

These people cashing out on this sort of setup are a dime a dozen anymore, there's little any of us can do to stop it. Take one down, 5 pop up in it's place. It's the sad reality, make something nice and somebody else is guaranteed to ruin it somehow.

Actually there was no response of apathy from myself.

The files were included as a genuine error (being in devs/kickstarts) and were not even correctly located for use as the main bios files for Amiberry.

The files were removed at windale's request , however, the reason for my dislike and removal of his comments from GitHub were a result of him posting there about the WHDbooter , on a page for another area of my the project (the config maker), and continuing to post on the matter despite me making this point to him.

As is clear from the language used above , the intent was purely to annoy, and given that he previously has caused issues on the Facebook (taking , rather badly , responses to requests which there was not capacity to resolve in the time he wanted), and had falsely claimed he did not use Facebook (accounts across several sites are not that hard to follow) I stand by my response to him,

Whilst I too do not condone piracy, my personal opinion on the matter of older bios files may differ to some... ( considering I still own a considerable amount of Amiga hardware with this rom data) nonetheless, I still removed files and it is irrelevant to the main RetroPie project here , and I would always respect the wishes of this forum... i would note this is why I have never posted regarding my project/Private Facebook group on this site, since reference may be made to using easy to obtain (google) files which anyone can download.

I hope this explains my position on this matter, and thank you to Buzz for removing personal details.
