How to Update Retropie?
-
Probably a common question, but how do I update to the latest version of Raspian stretch, or install whatever update necessary? or could point me to a tutorial or in the right direction.

how do I update to the latest version of Raspian stretch,
clarification: the latest version of Raspberry Pi OS (used to be called "Raspbian") is based on Debian Buster. The previous major version was based on Debian Stretch - I guess you are running this version.
Sadly, the answer is that you cannot really update from Stretch to Buster. there are long and complex tutorials around, but we cannot support using them - they will have a good chance of breaking your system in ways that may not be immediately obvious. The supported answer is to just back up what you need, and start again from a fresh Buster-based image: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/First-Installation/

@90sgamer you can read about what to backup and how to do it here: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Updating-RetroPie/#making-a-backup
You want backup option two so you can migrate over your ROM and BIOS files and any customizations you may have made.

@simpleethat I agree. It's great that it's all config files and easily backed up and replicated. The trick is knowing which files to back up, but it's not that difficult. :)
