I'm not sure what to try to troubleshoot this. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

@otterjones Its the theme. Its designed for 1080P. Either force the pi to use 1080P or use a different theme.

It is. I just double checked and made sure to explicitly set it to use 1080p, and it still looks the exact same.

What version of emulationstation do you have?

This happened to me after updating, the solution was to Come back to the previous version.

I flashed the image I had been using when I replaced my slowing down microsd card. The NES FAMICON & SNES mini themes all 3 worked fine then.

Not to sound completely stupid, but how does one go back to a previous version?

I did the following, downloaded the original retropie image, mounted on Linux, extracted the original files, and copy the old files to the sd card.

I gotcha. I keep all my roms and scraped data on a USB, so I just reimaged from the stock image. I'm gonna update the script so I can install duckstation, but I'm not gonna update anything else and just try that, then install the theme and see what it does.

It's all working correctly now. I used the stock image, then updated the OS, removed all main packages and installed only the packages I needed. I never updated emulationstation. Installed the NES-mini theme and it's showing up properly now. Thanks for helping me out and pointing me in the right direction. Really appreciate it.

Yeah I also encountered this issue after updating everything. Reinstalling doesn't solve it. The theme probably needs to be updated by the creator.
