Blank dark screen after boot

Hello, this is my first time posting here.
I have a pi 4 running retropie automatically after booting. I noticed that a couple of days ago, it returns a blank dark screen. There is a video signal, but it just shows an empty dark screen. if I plug a keyboard and press ALT+Tab and return to the emulationstation it shows the normal picture.
Can you please help me fix this issue? Let me know which technical info you need and I shall provide.

Are you using the wrong micro-HDMI port? If you only use the second port I believe it will show the boot text but then nothing after. Does that sound like what you are experiencing? The primary display should be connected to the leftmost micro-HDMI, closest to the USB-C power port.

@sleve_mcdichael No, that is not the issue. I am using the correct HDMI port, the one with sound, the one closest to the usb-c port.

Are you using the desktop to start EmulationStation ? This is not supported on a Raspberry Pi, EmulationStation (and the emulators it starts) should run outside of the Desktop env.
