I like to keep configs. What files are critical I need to backup then restore to a fresh copy
-
@saki hello,
Actually for the backup you need to read this section on the Retropie documentation website:https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Updating-RetroPie/#backup-option-2
but be warned, if you would use any preconfigured third party sd-cards, it can be really time consuming. And some of the configuration files can cause extra stress.

Over network share: roms/, bios/, configs/.
Or off the filesystem/SD image (these are the same directories, by different method):
/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/ /home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/ /opt/retropie/configs/

@sleve_mcdichael I prefer DiskInternals Linux-Reader and save above folders to my windows computer via sd-card reader. Over network also possible.

@sleve_mcdichael thank you Is it possible to back up the fruitbox and themes
-
@saki I don't know what fruitbox is. Default themes are in
/etc/emulationstation/themes
which is not backed up over the network share but you can copy (or move) them into the "custom" location at/opt/retropie/configs/all/emulationstation/themes
and they will be included.
