    I have roms for mame that work in version 0.141 from 2010. I know that you can repack the roms with diff-files, etc., but the topic always seemed very complex to me and I would like to avoid getting into it. Is there a way to use the old Mame version 0.141 in a current retropie version so that my roms work?

      The MAME versions available in RetroPie are listed in https://retropie.org.uk/docs/MAME/.

        MAME2010 (based on 0.139) will be mostly compatible.

        However, keep in mind it is recommended choosing an arcade emulator then getting the romsets for it, not the other way around. I don't think MAME2010 is very good, it's probably lacking in every areas (compatibility, accuracy and integration with the libretro api) while not having great performance benefits.

          Now I'm a bit confused. At some site you can find various rom packs, currently for example the newest version is 0.243. In the list of supported Mame versions in RP I don't see any version that supports the current rom pack. Which emulator (on which most games run) and in which version would you recommend me? Then I would use that version number as the basis for finding a rom pack.

            @10vorne

            MAME and lr-mame are for the current/latest rompack.

              @10vorne Please don't post links to ROM sites, even archived ones.

                @mitu I'm sorry. I thought that named site would be no problem...

                  Most 2D games will work in FBNeo and/or MAME2003-plus, which should be your primary choices because they have tighter integration within the libretro api. Note that they are outside of MAME versioning but finding their romsets isn't hard. Other games might be supported or not by more recent versions of MAME.
