i do all the update, the retropie setup-script and the other update
When getting to the screen saying
(Would you like to update the underlying os packages (eg kernel etc)
Everytime it ask me that, it starts to update that, but at some point, it just stops/failing -
@raspberry79 it’s probably not stoping. Some packages take awhile to uncompress and install. And from your end it looks like a frozen screen. Sometimes OS update could take an hour or more. Any reason you need to update the core os? Many times it’s not need to run the updated emulators and sometimes breaks things. I say if you have a working build, just leave it be,.

What's the actual error message when the update fails or stops ?
Please also provide the info asked in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first.

This looks like an under-voltage or sdcard error. You've not provided any info from https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first, so I'm going to guess you may have a faulty power supply or you're overclocking the Pi ?

The format is not important, writing the RetroPie image on the sdcard will re-format the card automatically.

I never overclocked the pi 4 and it has a 64Gb sd card.

How and which version did you install first?
The Screenshot in your 1. Post says "version 4.6.4", so you are trying to update this old version? -
