Check the rom file/folder permissions and if running on a raspberry pi make sure your Gpu_split is set to high enough or switch back to using carbon theme.

I have put Gpu_split on 128 and still having issues. All new boards have this issue it seems. I have updated so on old board . If I unplug controllers and start up it works fine

The Pi4 boards don't need any special GPU memory reservations, since they can allocate VRAM dynamically. Your issue may be caused by the controllers - ES will crash if the controller connection is unstable. If you run dmesg -w from the terminal you should see if the controllers disconnects repeatedly.

Can you provide more info about your setup, as detailed in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first ?

@mitu Thanks for your response! Yes it is a 2ABCB RPI4B. I have an image flashed on SD card for retro gaming. I have used image many times and it works on board I bought several years ago but gives me a hard time on new boards with new controllers/joysticks for retro pi. I have taken SD card and plugged into older board and ran updates in terminal how this crash error continues to haunt me.
If I unplug USB to controllers and reboot than plug in it runs fine until we reboot and error comes back. Please help

Then it means the controllers or the connection cable is faulty. How many controllers you have connected ? You haven't added any new information from the info asked in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first, please do so.

You need to give us some more info to help diagnose your problem.
Did the image you're using has ever worked on a Pi4 ? When you say you 'updated so on old board' - does this mean you've used a Pi3 with the same image/sdcard to do the update ? What image are you using ?
