Simplest edit to rename a single rom wboy.zip to wonderboy.zip
-
Hello - could anyone tell me the simplest edit I can make to rename one rom? I want to change wboy.zip to wonderboy.zip ? I'm running retropie on my Pi3 by the way. Thanks

@andrewcoughlan why would you do that? The names of arcade-roms should not be changed at all, they would not be recognized by any emulator anymore.

If you just want to change the name that is displayed in emulationstation you should be able to highlight the game press Select then EDIT GAMES METADATA. I believe it’s the first option on that list. -
@WhiteT982 For
arcade
systems, EmulationStation doesn't show you the file (.zip
) name, it automatically translates it to the 'real' name (i.e. Wonder Boy (set 1, 315-5177)). -

In example "Mercs (World)" became "CAPCOM: Commando II: Mercs".But as Mitu said: this is the way to change the name of the game in the ES Gamelist - not the zipped Rom the TO talked about.

Thanks for the comments - all very good feedback really. But to just put this to bed for me: I'm thinking now that, in my specific case, the text 'wboy' is encoded into one of the files that make up the zip file. It must be somewhere. So, if I can change it there, then I can rename it to anything [buffer size and all the rest considered]. This would rename the rom then. There's a chap on youtube who shows some tools to edit these internal files that make up the rom zip. But the basic premise here is that the name 'wboy' is somewhere defined within the files that make up the rom.

No it's not, it's defined in the emulator, the emulator determine which game you are trying to play by its name, then will map the content into memory by matching it with its database.
In layman's terms, you can't rename an arcade romset.
