Reicast on 4.4 won't map arcade sticks even with mapping script

Hey guys, I have a Rpi 3B+ running Retropie 4.4.13. Its setup exactly how I want so I want to avoid updating anything if I can. My reicast does not read my DragonRise arcade buttons even when I use the mapping script. It creates a file in /opt/retropie/configs/dreamcast/mappings but nothing happens. If I run the +Start Reicast bash script it doesnt go anywhere and comes back to the menu. Any help would be appreciated!
I've tried adding these to the emu.cfg file as well:

evdev_mapping_1 = /opt/retropie/configs/dreamcast/mappings/controller_DragonRiseInc.GenericUSBJoystick.cfg
