@lexieye I’m thinking RetroPie is working properly is because I’m trying to play Crash Bandicoot USA version and it’s asking for 5501 bios but RetroArch isn’t looking in the right place

on original Pi hardware RetroPie will ask for PSX bios for the region of the game

BIOS FILES NEEDED:

SCPH1001.BIN
The original. Released in North America on 9/9/95. Did not feature S-Video output port like the 1000.

scph5500.bin
Japanese revision. CD drive mech was relocated, onboard electronics shortened by ~20 percent, seperate ports for A/V composite output were replaced by the A/V Multi Out port.

scph5501.bin
North American version of the 5500.

scph5502.bin
European version of the 5500.

scph7001.bin
North American 7000.

scph7502.bin
European 7500.

The same location is configured by RetroPie regardless of platform (Pi or PC). You can check in the RetroArch's menu for the folder location ( Settings > Directory > System/BIOS ) and see if it's set to $HOME/RetroPie/BIOS.

@lexieye Check if the bios matches the md5 checksum. You can also try renaming the PSXONPSP660.bin bios to whatever Beetle wants. It's what I use.

That's ok, RetroPie handles things differently than standalone RetroArch, cores are installed separately when needed and they're not installed in RetroArch's default core location.

That's not supported, but it's still no indication whether it uses it's own HLE BIOS or the external BIOS files you copied.
Post a verbose log on pastebin.com and we can see if the BIOS files are found. You've not mentioned your system details - what hardware/RP version/etc.

BTW, Ubuntu 18 is getting out of support and you should consider upgrade to a LTS release.

I had multiple problems (maybe my fault) of everything being installed under /root.
This was a nightmare of moving folders out of /root and changing permissions just to get GENESIS and SNES games to work.

Get the log file I mentioned and we'll see what's causing the issue.

RetroPie doesn't install anything under the root user. If you follow the instruction in the docs, everything should be installed and configured for the regular user that performed the installation. If this is a first time installation, I recommend you start over fresh on a newer Ubuntu LTS version.

I suggest you re-install the system, but since it's very old, your GPU may not be enough to run PS1 games with lr-beetle-psx at an acceptable speed.

I used the built in Setup Script to remove emulationstation (but not the dependencies) and did a fresh install [retropie_setup.sh]

I then updated everything with terminal [apt-get update]

I also just selected the basic install method to just install all x86 as standard

Because Ubuntu & my laptop is old it will take me a while to select what emulator are best for each system as just changing Mame2003 to NeoGeo all my roms play fine

But I have installed a stand-alone-app called PCSXR from the software updated and it can run PlayStation games at 50 fps

can you direct me to any documentation on how I can swap this core for beetle insured RetroArch instead of me using just one app, that it can be part of EmulationStation

@lexieye you would just need to add a PCSXR entry to your configs/psx/emulators.cfg file. See https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Add-a-New-System-in-EmulationStation/#step-31-launch-roms-with-the-runcommand-script for some details (it's in the context of adding a new system but you can add a new emulator to an existing system in the same way.)
