Question about menu art on emulator launch
-
Hi,
First of all, great new website and forum.
To make things tidier with my Retropie install, I wanted to use the new 'show menu art' option via the runcommand script, so it shows up the box art when launching a ROM and hides the console output - but it doesn't seem to work for me when it is enabled. I use .png files and they are all stored correctly within their relevant system directly in the /opt/retropie/configs/all/emulationstation/downloaded_images folder. Does the script look elsewhere for this box art, or is it simply unable to display PNG's?
Thanks!

@movisman what version of retropie? Have you tried updating retropie-setup, as PNG support for that was added recently.

Latest version, 3.6 from a fresh image (I decided to do this since the move to Jessie and wanted a clean install). Once the image was written to the SD card, I then updated the setup script and did a full update from binary to make sure I had the very latest commits, before reinstating my config and making some improvements.
This was a couple of weeks back. I updated the retropie-setup script the other day though as I wanted to install lr-mame2010 from experimental to test something, but the menu art still doesn't appear for me. When was PNG support added? Do I need to install anything else manually after updating the script?
Thanks

Not sure if this has any additional effect or worth a mention, but because I use a USB sound card I get the following output on the console when launching any ROM:
lvl0: VolumeControl::init() - Failed to find mixer elements!I know this is a known side effect when using USB over the built in 3.5mm jack - perhaps any console output on screen is taking over any attempt at showing box art? Just a thought.
Thanks

It was implemented on the 29th Feb - note that your image must be named "ROMNAMEWITHOUTEXTENSION-image.jpg or ROMNAMEWITHOUTEXTENSION-image.png) which is how the ES or sselph's scraper names them.
It might be due to the naming if you are using custom images etc. It doesn't parse the gameslists xml or anything (for performance reasons)

Ah, this makes complete sense.
I am indeed using custom images - I created my own gamelist.xml for each system as I used 3D box art for all my images. I don't have millions of games you see, so I put a little time into making my own metadata for each system to get a more consistent look across the board, I only use name and image. My images are named after their equivalent ROM's so it was easier to create the gamelist.xml. This means though, that they don't have "-image" appended at the end of the name.
I will do a quick find and replace on .png in all my gamelist files to change out .png to -image.png, and will see if this sorts the problem. It'll only take 5 minutes to do this.

Just to confirm I changed my files and gamelist.xml appropriately, so they have "-image" as a suffix on the PNG files, and now they display as intended on loading a ROM.
Thanks for the help!
