Trying to get Atari 5200 Games working on an RPI4 for Christmas
-
I've had zero success. I'm attempting to use retropie-buster-4.8-rpi4_400.img on a 4GB RPI4. I'm having trouble getting a game pad configured. I've tried the original Atari 5200 controller with a USB adapter but the buttons don't match up very well at all.
Does anyone have a recommendation or a wireless controller that works well with Atari 5200 games?

I think any controller that has an analog joystick will work. XBox/PS3 or Ps4 controllers, any clone of any of them should be fine.
For the initial configuration, you can also use a keyboard and configure it instead of a gamepad to navigate EmulationStation and start games.

@jgold You can try manually adding SDL Joy mappings like here:
opt/retropie/configs/atari800/lr-atari800.cfg
opt/retropie/configs/atari5200/retroarch.cfg -

This will not help if you can't navigate the front-end UI to start the game.

I can't get the keyboard to work. I hold down a key to start the keyboard configuration. I go through all the settings and try to pick something reasonable. When I'm all done the focus is on the OK button at the bottom but I have no way to press it. I defined Start as the enter key and Select as the right shift but neither of them will press the button.
This is where I'm pretty much stuck. I think it won't work because whatever key it's looking at to accept the button press isn't defined yet. I can't press the OK until after it's defined so I can't finish defining it.
Why do I need to set up a keyboard? Shouldn't that already default to something reasonable?
This can't be normal. There must be something else messed up or I'm doing something wrong.

You need to press the key you chose as
A
to confirm.A
is the action/ok button. Why do I need to set up a keyboard? Shouldn't that already default to something reasonable?
It could, but some controllers can identify as keyboard devices and they won't work if the pre-defined mapping wouldn't match their layout.

@mitu @RapidEdwin08 I had tried to use the A key I had selected above but it didn't work. I finally got it set up but I don't know what if anything I did differently.
I think I got both the keyboard and controller working and moved on to getting the Atari 5200 games to work. That's also a lot move involved than I would have thought but I'm working my way through the documentation.
Thanks for the help! I really appreciate it.
