Black screen
-
I was trying to set up splash screens for my RetroPie on my raspberry pi 5. When I rebooted it the screen went black. Can't get it back. I also might have touched an option for composite enable or disable not really sure what that means but I'm assuming that composite means you are using HDMI output. I really wish the menu was easier to navigate then switching off things but with a touch of a button by accident it's very frustrating.
So it's either the splash screen or the composite but either way I can't get my image back. When it tries to boot it's just a black screen. Everything is updated and brand new however```
code_text#splashcreens #composite

No, composite means video is via the Composite output, which on a Pi5 doesn't have a jack, but the video signal can be extracted from 2 GPIO pins. Either way, this disabled the HDMI output(s) on the Pi.

Which menu are you referring to ?
Support for the Pi5 is still pending in RetroPie and at the moment there's no splashscreen support for it. I don't know how you enabled/installed it, but the current splashscreen code is not enabled on the Pi5 and it's also not working on a Bookworm.
If you've modified
config.txt
to enable/disable things, that might explain the black screen - especially if you enable the Composite video output. Revert the modifications done toconfig.txt
or copy a defaultconfig.txt
from a RaspiOS image and you'll probably get the image back. -
@mitu I am currently unable to modify edit or replace any config files. Apparently due to the lack of ability to log in from the root. I have yet to figure that out either.
How do I change the composite back to normal?

@90sgamer Ok so I'm settling on the fact that I turned off the composite setting by accident, my thumb grazed the button and changed the setting so when I went back to change it I didnt know what the original setting was 50/50 odds i suppose.
So do we want the composite setting on or off?
In order to edit the config file from a computer, i need to be able to edit files from a computer, everything is read only. Ive been trying to use Putty program to edit but everything is untouchable, I even got to open the file /etc/ssh/sshd_config to try to allow for root login to take restriction off of file editing and its still read only. thats as far as i got
