Pi Model or other hardware: 4 Revision B
Power Supply used: Official Pi Power Supply
    RetroPie Version Used: 4.8
Built From: Image found on Raspberry Pi SD Card Imager
    USB Devices connected: Keyboard
    Controller used: PiCade Hat
Error messages received: lvl0: VolumeControl::init() - Failed to find mixer elements!

How to replicate the problem: When launching any game/emulator the error message "lvl0: VolumeControl::init() - Failed to find mixer elements!" will appear before the game loads. After the game loads, there is no audio that plays. Audio in the EmulationStation menu does play. Attempting to play audio through speaker connected to Picade hat. Speaker is wired directly to hat.

If I change the audio settings within EmulationStation to Default Sound card, PCM, and ALSA I do not get the error. However, when opening the Audio Settings from Configuration>Audio, I get an error message that no soundcards are detected or they are disabled.

I have tried changing the default audio using both the EmulationStation UI and by changing the cfg files directly.

Which image are we talking about - RetroPie or RaspiOS Did you install any additional drivers or run additional scripts for the PiCade hat to work ?
      Please post your /boot/config.txt file.
