Trying to get sound out of the TRS-80 Model 3
-
This one's been defeating me for some time. I'm running it through MAME/MESS, specifically lr-mess-system-trs80m3. According to the MESS commandline guide here:
https://arcade.vastheman.com/minimaws/machine/trs80m3
there are a few of what appear to be soundboards on the Centronics interface, most obviously covox_stereo.
If I enable those, I get various audio options in the MESS Tab menu, all of which I've got at maximum, but the problem is that Master Volume is always set at 0dB, and can only be LOWERED from there, not increased.
What am I missing here? Anyone managed to get any noise out of a TRS-80?

Looks like that's a no, then. Any ideas, @Folly? You're my only hope now :D

Which game are you trying to get sound from ?
Back in the days I also used a covox on an early pc.
It's just a simple digital to analog converter using resistors on the printer port.
I remember that you needed a driver or the game had to be specifically written for it.
I would expect that for the trs80m3 that would be the same as it is not detected by the computer.
Did you find some info about that on the internet ? -
@Folly From ANY game, but for example Time Bandit, which I know definitely HAS sound.

I will see if I can check this tomorrow.

Hi,
Just tried to get time bandit running.
Too bad I didn't manage.
Seems we also had a discussion about the trs80m3 back in 2021.
Seems it's a troublesome driver.
I don't want to spend hours to get it working, sorry to disappoint you.. -
@Folly No worries, thanks for trying. I tried a few of the other TRS80 models but they don't seem to be any better :(
