PC video modes missing

Hello,

I'm on Pi5 8go, Retropie, Bookworm Lite 64bit.

I tried to force disable 4K everywhere, manipulate firmware/config.txt and cmdline.txt. I think adding "video=HDMI-A-1:1280x720@60" in cmdline.txt worked, but now I don't have pc resolutions anymore in runcommand menu.

Few days later, I rollback cmdline.txt to re-enable 4K to restore full list of video modes but the 4K and intermediate PC resolution like 800x600 did not reappear in the list. There is only TV resolutions from 480p to 1080p. I tried to restore old firmware/config.txt backups and change "hdmi_force_hotplug", "hdmi_group" and "hdmi_mode" values but nothing change.

What did I miss?

The hdmi_ options have no effect on the recent RaspiOS (bullseye/bookworm) releases. Can you post the output of the following commands:

kmsprint -m
cat /proc/cmdline

@mitu I tried on another screen (4K), all video modes reappeared. I put the first screen back, all modes are still there, even 4K resolutions. I don't understand how it works.

My goal is to have all PC and TV video modes up to 1920x1080 (even if screen doesn't support some of them), having completely disabled 4K.

Do you think it is possible?

Forcing a certain set of resolutions, even if the dispay doesn't support it, can be achieved by using an EDID file - see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_mode_setting#Forcing_modes_and_EDID.
Not sure what you're trying to accomplish though, since the display not supporting a certain video mode will cause issues if you choose to use that certain video mode .

Some windows games through Wine work only in 800x600 or 1024x768. I prefer them to be displayed perfectly on PC screens than reduced in a corner to ensure compatibility with TVs.

Currently, runcommand video mode need to be identical to windows game resolution and wine desktop resolution to be fullscreen.

Maybe there are solutions to strech them to fit screen in any video mode like others emulators ?

No idea how Wine works in this scenario. You should run it separately from a desktop (x11) session and choose various options to see how it behaves.

@mitu The useful tvservice command doesn't exist anymore. Is there an alternative to change video mode like tvservice -e "DMT 11" ?

@Nash No, there's no alternative to tvservice. The runcommand launch menu can tell the emulator/port to switch the resolution, but it's not similar to tvservice - which made the changes permanent.
