RP-Video Manager Not Applying Overlays

Hi @Floob , I had a question regarding your video manager script. I've had success with this before on an older pi, and originally on the one I have now (before my 8Bitdo woes necessitated a reinstall). But now, it seems the script isn't actually doing anything.

Installation seems to go fine, once I choose options (3 for 1080p, then 1 for general CRT overlays with scanlines), no changes occur. I intended to try the MAME option as well, but suddenly none of my MAME roms are working anymore.

Thanks for any help you might offer, this is more or less a fresh install, with the exception of copying over my game directories with sselph gamelists included, and some minor edits to the es_systems.cgf)

EDIT: Little digging shows that no "overlays" directory is being created automatically in /opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch, any ideas why?

EDIT 2: I managed to get the overlays folder installed through the "manage packages" menu, but there still seems to be a permissions issue. Not sure what's causing this.

When I install the video manager, I run everything as instructed on the github page, but then I try to run the "installed required files" since it's not installing what I need. I get this as a result

mkdir: cannot create directory /opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/overlays/1080p_4-3’: Permission denied

...show this for every file. nothing seems to get installed. How do I get around this permissions issue? This all seems very strange compared to previous installs of retropie.

EDIT 3: I'd love to know some thoughts as to why this permissions issue started, but I have solved it for now.

I used sudo chown -R pi /opt/retropie/ to give me the proper permissions, deleted the initial video manager install, then redid the whole thing. Opted to install needed files again, and finally things went as intended.

Which version of RetroPie are you using, and which version of the Video Manager?

I actually ran into the same issue, I'll try the fix you posted above. Curious, did this ever get resolved? Was the sudo chown -R pi /opt/retropie/ command you used sufficient to not cause any other issues?

I updated the tool a while ago to resolve most of these issues. If you confirm the version of RetroPie and the video tool you are using, I could replicate and check it out.

@Floob Holy crap, I didn't expect you'd answer that's awesome haha.

I'm new to Retropie and Linux in general. I'm running RetroPie 4.0.2 and Video Manager v1.2.
I was about to go through my steps and I realized I missed the very first step after running the video manager..I went right to Overlays for 1080p rather than going to Config Menu and then Install Required Files. I feel like such an idiot.

So that said, whats the easiest fix for this? Can I go through the setup again or will that cause an issue where all the other steps are already done?

@gmsnoodles Yes, if you run the install option now, it shouldnt be a problem. Let us know how that goes.
