      Hi guys,

dreaming of better performance for my pi zero I updated as I did last time. But this time I was confronted with this after reboot:

Is there any way to fix it?
I am so glad I have an SD card image I can revert back to. Guess you better NEVER CHANGE A RUNNING SYSTEM. :(

      best wishes!

Quick suggestions, I'd exit ES and try reinstalling whatever theme you were using from the setup script

          will try. thanks!

update: just noticed I ran out of space. before the update I had around 250 MB free space on the 8GB card. now on 4.1 I only have 27 MB free :(

          how come?

When RetroPie does the update, some files are over written with bigger (or smaller) files but some packages have to be compiled so the source in downloaded and compiled then it moves/copies the new binaries over the original binaries.

Having only 250MB free space on your 8GB card is going to kill the life of it and make it slower because it doesn't have extra space to swap out data when files are changed/updated.

thanks for letting me know: so the next update I will free at least .... how much memory before I start? what do you suggest?

and is it a common issue that themes are not working after an update?

You should always use the largest SD card you can afford. They ain't that expensive anymore. I'm using a 64GB SD card and I only have 7GB free space on it, I wish I got the 128GB card.

Update only when you really need to update, I'm stil on v4.0.2 and it works fine. No need to update, you still can download older versions from:

I usually try to have at least 1GB free space before updating but you might be able to get away with less...I'm not really sure.

and is it a common issue that themes are not working after an update?

I'm thinking that the SD card ran out of space before it could completely update something to do with the themes. Might be parts of EmulationStation or the themes themselves.

                  Update
For daily use (not updating RetroPie) you probably want to leave at least 10-15% of the SD card free. So for an 8GB card you'd probably want to leave about 800MB to 1.2GB free space.

Sometimes running sudo apt-get clean might clear up a little bit more space.

You might be able to free up enough space and the re-run that Update All Installed Packages from the RetroPie Setup Script and it might be able to fix itself and start working again like normal. As long as this time it doesn't run out of free space.

If that doesn't work then try Basic Install from the RetroPie Setup Script and if that doesn't work then I'd suggest backing up everything and re-flashing your SD card and starting over.
