Where To Learn About Arcade Controls?

In getting frustrated with my Gameboy Advance build I'm thinking about going in the opposite direction and making something big. My Super Famicom build will be connected to a 65" TV, and while the stock controllers are nice, I'm thinking about buying some cheap repro controllers and connecting their guts to "real" arcade controls, effectively making arcade controls that will work with a real Super Nintendo. The trouble is, I have no idea where to start with learning about arcade parts. For those of you who have built cabinets, do you have any suggestions on where to start, or anything to avoid?

Maybe you can do the easy way. Use the Gameboy Advanced shell just for LCD and Pi zero mounting (maybe you can also use a Pi2 or 3) and then use a USB connector for gampad control and you've got a "half-portable" build. For power source use an external 5V power adapter.... :) -
@cyperghost I haven't given up, just taking some time to think and regroup. My desire for ABXY made it a lot more complicated, and I don't want the shell to look like garbage when I'm done.
