I used the method of using Win32 Disk Imager to make a backup of my sd card. I am having problems and would like to restore back to that. Is it as simple has hitting write instead of read with the sd card drive and the backup image selected? I can't believe that I am unable to find info on this!

Exactly that. The backup image you took is a full image like the ones you can download from the Retropie site, so just write it to your sd card and it should be fine.

thanks! Just to clarify, no sd card wiping or anything needed? Thanks for the quick response! :D

I'd wipe it, for good measure.
