Just ordered a Pi 3 and it's on it's way to be my set top classic console emulation machine. But I wonder if it'll be simple to run BOINC on it to make it useful in-between gaming sessions.

I assume all I'll have to do is first install NOOBS onto my microSD card, then use that to get Raspbian, then use it's package manager to install BOINC which ought to set BOINC to run as a daemon, yeah? Then follow these instructions to install RetroPie https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/manual-installation

Is that the easiest and most effective way? Or can I use RetroPie's own SD image to start from, and add BOINC to it without any hassle?

      TIA :-)

Don't bother with NOOBS, just download the RetroPie image and flash it on your card. I'm not familiar with BOINC's requirements, but to my knowledge the RetroPie image has Raspbian Jessie Lite as its basis, so I'd just install BOINC on top of the RetroPie image.

@obsidianspider Does the RetroPie version of Raspbian allow one to to run a GUI, or am I limited to the console?

@Wizardling you can install a desktop if you want, but Raspbian Lite is command line-based.
