Has anyone ever gotten 80 columns or NTSC working with VICE x128 on RetroPie? It crashes for me.

If you try to use 80-column mode with x128 (the Commodore 128 emulator) included with VICE, you consistently get a crash shortly after video initialization - the same occurs if you try to run x128 in 40 columns in NTSC video modes.
I originally bugged the issue with the VICE team here, who concluded the issue was indeed with the video driver.
x64 doesn't seem to suffer from this issue, nor do any other emulators I've tried (and that's quite a few indeed!) in RetroPie...but at the same time, I can't believe I'm the only one having the issue. :)
My configuration is the latest release of RetroPie (as of last night) and the latest precompiled VICE binaries on a RPi 3 - pretty vanilla stuff, and 100% reproducible. (The simplest way is to run x128 with the -80 command-line switch.)
Any tips/feedback/confirmations welcomed.
