I have a had a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B with Retropie for three months without a problem. A friend of mine brought me a new, boxed RPi3 (same model). I have had errors all night:

First, a series of text says things like ERROR cannot load GAMESLIST.
Second, I formatted a flash drive and made a retropie folder so the Pi would populate the folder so I could load ROMs. It refused (yet, my personal Pi will do it no problem).
Third, no matter what, it will not transfer ROMs (after I did the whole directory thing and load ROMs using both my Pi to create the file tree and my windows machine to load ROMs).

As it stands now, it boots up and has the RETROPIE selection, but no game consoles. I can change splashscreens and navigate to the file manager.

Is it a bad image on the SD Card? What should I do? I'm not computer stupid, and I have successfully installed games on my personal Pi. Why is my friend's new purchase so different?

It might be a bad SD card. Try booting the new Pi with the card from yours and see if it misbehaves.

Yes, with my SD card, my friend's RPi3 works fine. It acts completely like mine. Definitely not a hardware issue.

Do I just reformat his SD and install Retropie?

You should give it a try to start, but it might just be a faulty card. If that's the case, make sure you replace it with a known brand from a reputable retailer. You'd be surprised at how often these cards are counterfeited.

That was the problem. The SD Card had a bad install. I imaged Retropie as the instructions stated. All good now. Thank you! You've been a huge help!

Not a problem. Glad it's up and running.
