Hello, I am part of a school club that is trying to deploy a raspberry pi arcade, powered by RetroPie into our school. The only thing that we have a hard time figuring out is a way a to implement a time limit for each person playing. What we are looking to do is have a bar-code scanner that gives the read number to a program running alongside of retro pi. After a set time it would push you back to the emulator you came from. Also the program should prevent reuse of the same code for a specific time frame.

So what I would like help with is, how to write that program, or directions to a program that my club can modify to do this.

@iconrumble yeah I already have my schools permission to place the arcade in the cafetiria, and we are looking into all the legal stuff.

@LazyLizard Have you thought building upon an open-source internet cafe management software?

@iconrumble So I can assume that pi arcade will let me run other programs, I am pretty new at coding. This is my first software project ever.

You can have a program similar to timekpr running alongside retropie, that will kill the emulador program when time runs out.
As far as programming goes I can't help you much..., I just wanted to suggest this idea...
Maybe someone else in the forum can help you out?

Regarding copyright issues, as mentioned by iconrumble, I've written a couple of short blog posts on Emulation Legality, and Extracting images from your own game cartridges.

I'm reminded of something my primary school did for a short while many, many years ago - they used to hire videos and show them on a (standard sized) TV on a Saturday morning. We were charged 50p, to attend, ostensibly for crisps and a drink, but it didn't wash legally, and the whole enterprise was shut down. Shame - first time I ever saw Raiders was at the film club!
