How many of you found out about RetroPie because you couldn't buy the NES Classic?

My path that leads to discover of Retro Pie from NES Classic/Mini looks like:
NES Classic/Mini -> Look for a hack to run the first Contra game -> Saw the Reddit discussion about the Allwinner CPU -> Found similar chip also in Raspberry Pi -> Retro Pie
I got one US version of the NES Mini from a friend while I was leaving China from vacation in Nov 2016, who bought it with 2 joysticks on Taobao.com as a gift at a little more than 1000 RMB or 160 USD/EUR.
I didn't point out immediately in front of him when he presented the gift that I felt it pretty much overpriced as a non-hackable TV-Box like system, even sealed with Original Nintendo.
Now I have understood what the Pie is about. I am wondering, why shouldn't a HDMI-cable to an Android tablet and a Bluetooth mini-joystick gratify my desire towards a tiny TV-top game box in my living room besides the Wii ...

i also am one. seeing the prices online for double triple and even quadruple the original price. I saw a post on fb then looked it up on youtube and saw many tutorials. I have not completed mine yet im wait on one last part :)

I was just browsing eBay and one greedy a-hole is selling it for $10 000, yes 10k! What is this guy even thinking? Seriously, who is going to spend that much money on that crappy mini NES which has only 30 games? Soon, they will sell them in the stores again so you can get them for whatever they sold them.
Same happened in Europe with the PS4, the stock was very limited in the beginning so people bought them as quick as they could and sold them for a couple k's on the internet. Pretty stupid if you look at it because at that time they had only like 2 games, Fifa and Battlefield. Beside online would be pretty dead since not so many people had them. Now you can get a PS4 just for 299 euros.
You cannot even compare the NES mini to the Raspberry+RetroPie in my opinion.

The first time I saw or heard about the Famicon Mini (NES mini) the prices were already going up through the roof. Still curious to see it I watched a video on Youtube about it. There in the comments a guy was saying "Why pay that much for only 30 games in a tiny device if you can get lot more done on a Raspberry Pi for a better price." And that's how all started for me.
As some already mentioned you cannot compare the Pi with the NES mini. The Pi offers just way more, not only emulation of classic game systems. Even though that is what most people used it for.
I think the main reason why people would want the NES mini is "collectors value".
Maybe not now but in 10 or even 20 years from now having one laying around in mint condition would be probably priceless. -

I really doubt that. I think some collectors will pay a high price for it, but I heard that Nintendo will produce them soon so you will be able to buy one in the stores. I hope they do it quickly so those aholes who're selling it for those crazy prices will have nothing to sell anymore.
I wonder if the same will happen with the mini SNES.

I certainly did! I actually got as far as ordering a NES mini online but then received an email an hour later telling me my order was cancelled. I'm so glad I didn't get one now as I've got my Raspberry Pi 3b with RetroPie set up and it is totally beyond comparison. Some things were just meant to be :)

Me. I wanted a NES Classic for xmas and was out of stock, so looked around and found the Retropie.

@PetroRie yeah, its ridiculous! greed, but then again if they can get it sold for more than they bought it fine but im not purchasing it. good thing for all the people at retropi.

Had been getting back into some of my old Commodore gear, and have played some games through emulation on my Mac. Heard about RetroPie around that same time, a bit before the NES Classic talk. I just kept following my nose I guess :) I certainly understand how RP will get a boost because of Nintendo though.

I just bought one yesterday because how lame the NES Classic was. I've been dabbling with hyperspin on my PC and the plan was to build the cabinet, but this seams easier and less costly. what I like the most is I can take it anywhere. Still a lot to learn tho

But all in all the NES classic is an overkill on CPU and GPU resources. It's an ARM-7 4core CPU with 2,0 GHz. The GPU chipset is dualcore Mali-400 with 500MHz.
And this can only emulate a NES? ;)

Actully I am one of the ones that found RetroPie after buying and being one on the lucky ones to get a NES Classic. After just having the 30 games i wanted more. I needed to bring back my childhood. After loosing all my game systems in a weather storm 4 years ago in New York. I knew that I had to try to rebuild my lost. So Raspberry Pie and RetroPie had been able to heal my pain and bring this game lover back to life. THANK YOU ALL!!!!

Not this guy, I've been on retropie since the 1.x days. I single handedly convinced about 8 people to go retropie INSTEAD of nes classic, HAHA!

i was looking at the nes classic but didnt want anypart of the hype/stock issues. then searched for other alternatives. found retropie and never looked back! funny thing is now i play more snes,sega, playstation games than actual nes on it lol. i have genesis usb hub coming too for the old school look

Me! I've been jonesing for big-screen 8-bit/16-bit gaming since the NES Classic was announced... I had toyed with the idea of a Raspberry Pi in the past, but finding out about RetroPie sealed the deal. Starter kit in the mail!

Hahahaha I did. I saw this little nice but expensive gadget with only 30 games on it. but somewhere wanted to, well at least look at it before buying.. but sold out.. and then looked at reviews as I wanted to know more about it.. Retropie!!!! haha.. I just finished my Arcade Cabinet with a pi3. I jused old controls of an old iCade, connected them via GPIO and retrogame. AWESOME!!! I have loads of fun playing Mame roms. who cares about NES hahaha cheers!! JT

I was slightly interested in the NES Classic. But when I checked into getting one they were long gone unless you were willing to spend the crazy eBay prices for one. It's OK though, I was more of an Atari guy back in the day anyway. It's kind of funny because I had just about every system at one time or another and now they're all gone except for my Nintendo's. I'd much rather have my Atari's back, haha, especially my 8 and 16 bit computers. I still have in my possession every Nintendo console ever made not counting the handhelds. NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, and WiiU all in the house. I do have one handheld, the new 3DSXL and a PS4, but my son uses them the most.
Back OT...my always wanting an arcade machine of my own lead me to RetroPie. I was recently looking around and discovered the bartop arcade machines. Cheaper than a full sized and pretty cool but still more than I had to spend. That's when I also discovered the Raspberry Pi as a lot of those bartops are using them. At first I thought it was some sort of OS, didn't realize it was a small computer, haha. That lead to RetroPie and yesterday I got my first Pi and of course it's now running RP. I've got Mame and tons of ROMs running on my PC but the cool factor of a Raspberry Pi running RetroPie is totally awesome. I'll be upgrading my SD card from 32gb to 128gb soon and no telling how many more Pi's I'll get. And I still haven't checked out Raspbian, that will happen when I pick up the 128gb card.
Sorry for the long winded post. But yeah, RetroPie is fantastic!
