      Is there anything I would need to do differently with a pi zero to get Retropie up and configured compared to a pi 2?

        Nope...just make sure you get the Retropie image for the Pi1 rather than the one for Pi 2/3.

          Any major performance differences, are any n64 games playable?

            Yes...there are huge performance differences.
            PI 1 is a single core 1ghz processor
            Pi 2 and 3 are quad core.
            It will not play N64 games. I imagine they would be very choppy.
            Heck I have issues with N64 games on my pi2.
