Sftp error, cant connect to pi
-
Hi guys i cant connect to the pi 3 i have using ftp file zilla or winsfcp i can connect to emu movies for instance but not my pi, ive tried a different pi as well. I have a feeling its bt internet staopping me somehow? Any help guys?
I get
Fzstp started, protocal_version=7
Command:open "pi@123.143.1.125" 22
Command: pass: *******
Error: authentication failed
Error: critical error: could not connect to serverNow using other ftp it seems to fail at the same point. After entering passwords. Its not letting me establish a link. The host. User name and password are the same for all pi's
I can connect to an ftp on emu movies but i just cant seem to do it on my own network? By some crazy chance do you know what to try? -
Are you trying to FTP or use SCP? I don't recall the system having FTP on by default.
If you ant to SCP, yo have to change the protocol to SCP before you connect.
If FTP, disregard this.

I just want to get on to the pi using an ftp server. Ive followed every single video and txt on what to do. Change to sftp enter all relevent password and host ect... It makes a connection then askes me again for my password tgen wont let me in....

@messyraverbaby Is this from the home network or are you external trying to connect back in from external (say from a friend's house 10 miles away on their home broadband)? If you're external your local IP for the Pi won't work as your router will have an external address that is translating traffic from your internal IP range out to BTs infrastructure and then the net.
-
No im doing this on my own network at home
-
@messyraverbaby I don't think your home hub would be blocking internal FTP traffic then.
-
What the hell is stopping me then lol 😰😰😰😰
Well is there another way to delete all thr art i scraped for fba rather re-doing my whole pi. I still want to be able to connect via ftp client but for now i could just get rid off the artwork id be happy. And not by going through one by one lol unless thats theonly way then tough aye. -
@messyraverbaby Sorry. Apart from checking if you can ping the IP ok and maybe checking for any firewall settings that may be blocking it, I'm out of ideas. I'm not that up to speed with the Linux commands in raspbian.

A couple things:
-Can you ping the ip address?
-Is the IP address given in your example the actual IP address of the Pi? (most internal networks are in the 192.168.x.x range)
-Can you connect using the network name retropie rather than the IP address? (If a static IP isn't set on a router it can change) -
@mrbwa1 All good advice. That is definitely not a BT IP address. Setting a static IP for a Pi is definitely the route to take as it is accessed over the network in so many different ways. I have 3 Pis and having to recheck and reconnect SSH, samba, VNC and SCP every week or so would be a pita.

@messyraverbaby I would advise you to turn off the "BT Smart Setup" nonsense, if you have't already done it. It causes issues connecting outside and on the home network too. http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/networks/1404887/bt-smart-hub-settings-make-your-router-faster-and-less-annoying

@columboscoat I can connect via the network name, but I have a router flashed with TomatoUSB customer firmware and have a small bit of network management experience.
I looked up the given IP and it belongs to LG DACOM Corporation in Korea.
Since the example is not an approved private IP address, most routers are going to try and route traffic to that destination back out through the internet instead of across the local network.
I would try and ping retropie
That's the default network name and should return the local network address. The best choice would be to access the router admin page and set a static IP, but that can be a bit of work. Some of the newer all-in-one ISP modem/wifi combos don't exactly have a lot of options for stuff like static IP addresses either, so sometimes it's best to use the network name (retropie) for SSH/FTP/etc)

@markyh444
Cheers bud -
lol i changed the ip on that. Didnt want to upload my ip...wld you be able to give some pointers on how to do what you said?
-
Okay, whew! that makes a bit more sense. Honestly, if it's a 192.168.x.x address, you are safe posting it since it's just an internal address so none of us can get to it.
The first thin to try is to use the same ftp client and try to connect to "retropie" instead of "192.168.1.100" (example IP address). If you don't set a static IP address, the Pi's address can change from time to time. There isn't really a problem just using the name retropie instead of an IP. If it stops connecting at some point, it's usually after a power failure and rebooting the router can clear it up.
If you would like to look further into say setting up a static IP address can you please let us know what type of router you have? I can probably dig up an online tutorial on how to get in and change stuff like that for you.
