N64 emulators start, player 1 controller quits

Running retropie 3.7 on pi3. Using wireless xbox 360 controllers for player 1 and 2. Both work in emulation station. When loading some N64 emulators, player 1 controller doesn't load, player 2 controller works fine. Same Rom different emulator, and player 1 controller works again. Updated xbox driver. Same issues.
