I am thinking of getting a this deal off of ebay .... http://www.ebay.com/itm/222144633149?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

this seems to have everything I need to set up a game system.. I do have a few questions before I do this..

is 32gb on the sd card the max size, or can I use a larger one so I have more room for roms on it?

does retropie have the ability to save game progress, or is there a way to save it?

is the set up for it easy.. do I just put the sd card into a reader for my computer, and just add the rom files I have downloaded to the sd card?? is there a folder they go into ?

can I get a usb key and use that to run game files off from with retropie?

I have a read a few comments on the kit I am going to get , and it may have an older version of retropie on it, how do I update or install the lastest version?

      thanks from a nervous gamer
      Mike

@MuppetMikey please don't buy this kit. The person selling this is breaking the license of the emulators included as part of the retropie project and buying off them is not the right way forward.

Buy a Pi3 with a case and a separate sub gamepad and micro sd card. Download Retropie from here and build it yourself, it is so so easy.

I should also say, answers to all your questions on setup and adding roms is already in the Wiki documentation.

@MuppetMikey Don't buy that. They are selling that illegally. RetroPie is free - don't pay for it.

Get a kit on amazon like vilros or canakit and follow this guide to install retropie:

          https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/First-Installation

          Its very simple.

If you read the documentation it will answer 99% of your questions: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/

Also if you want a solution to your problems read this first: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first

@markyh444 ok wow .. I wasn't aware of the issues you point out.. I will not purchase this kit , now knowing the issues with it..

if I do buy it piece by piece I need to know if I can use a larger sd card or not, and have no clue as to where to look for that information..

@MuppetMikey lots of people use 32 and 64gb cards and some even use 128gb. A quick search on Google for pi compatible SD cards will find you the info you need. The kits you can buy off Amazon as @herb_fargus suggested do come bundled with SD cards of varying sizes too. Whatever comes pre-loaded on them can be wiped and replaced with the RetroPie image from here anyway.

                ok I found this Kit .. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Raspberry-Pi-3-Model-B-Starter-MC-BT-Premium-Ultimate-Kit-w-Fan-B-C-/231966223715?var=&hash=item360243ad63:m:m0mHSobmMcS6GfGx5FFZzoA

this doesn't appear to break any laws, and includes everything needed correct?

anyone know about how many games can fit on a 32gb sd card with retropie?

@MuppetMikey The complete NES Library is 237Mb and the SNES Library 1.7 Gb. So lots and lots and lots. Cartridge games are tiny in terms of size, it's CD based systems that start to eat up storage space.

@MuppetMikey I run the RetroPie operating system on an 8gb card and have a 128gb USB drive for all my ROMS. I have about 63,000 ROMS on there, including about 80 Playstation games, which by themselves take up probably half the drive. The rest is taken up by complete ROM sets for pretty much any system made before 2000.

@MuppetMikey You're welcome! As an added bit of info, if you scrape images/videos/etc for games, that takes up additional space. In many/most cases, the image (and especially video) for the game will take up a LOT more than the game itself, especially for the really older games.

Personally, I'm planning to get a 1TB PiDrive (http://wdlabs.wd.com/category/wd-pidrive/) for my system so that I can scrape videos for everything and add a lot more CD-based games, but want to do a few other things before I add that component.

but as a starting point a 32 gb sd card will be more then enough for sega , and nes, and snes game librarys.. that's what I am mainly looking to run on it ..

@MuppetMikey Yep, 32gb should be enough to hold just those systems. Especially if you don't have duplicate ROMs or anything other than verified originals.

@MuppetMikey Can't answer that, as it's against the terms of these forums. They are easy to find with a little Google'ing though.
