Newbie: Raspberry pi 3 No sound

Hi I am a newbie here and set up my pi, got the canakit 32gb set and bought a separate micro sd card 10 class and installed retropi and everything works fine but I have no sound at all via hdmi.
I have read a million things online on how to fix but I am still confused.
The micro sd card with retro pi does not have any other files on it, the micro sd card that came with the kit has the rasberian program on it and when I boot it up and try to fix the sound it won't work.
I'm not to familiar with what to do on this or how to fix it, can someone help me?
