Make games play in full screen?

Is there a way to make NES/SNES/MAME, etc. full screen when playing them? My normal menus look fine on my 4k TV after messing around with the overscan in the config.txt file, but the games still are letterbox. Is there a way to play them full screen? I tried to change the video settings in the menu that pops up before the game plays and set it to 1080p, but it does not make it full screen. Any ideas? Thanks!

Go into the RetroArch menu and adjust your aspect ratio to 16:9 instead of the default. Make sure you save your settings on exit.
