I'm sure I am missing something obvious, but: I just installed MAME2010 and put roms in place, and everything seems to be working except that portrait games are stretched out somewhat. (It looks like they are stretched to 4:3.) I am running on a 1080p TV and using video mode CEA-16. Is there a simple setting I'm missing for "don't stretch portrait games?" Thanks!

So, yeah, they are definitely stretching to 4:3 instead of the 3:4 they should be. Is there a way to fix this without having to do it separately for every single portrait game? It's as if when you turn on automatic rotation, it does it without reversing aspect ratio.

@clemon79 i got the mame2003 crt-pi-vertical configs that i am editing to use a 3:4 resolutionand using them on mame 2010. I really need to learn how to add the info in bulk to all of the files but i dont understand the windows commands jargon in the instructions on how to do this.

Did anyone ever come up with a solve for this? I am trying to help a friend set his up as a present for his wife, and we ran across this same issue, and I discovered that I was never able to fix it on mine. I did find something about going into libretro settings and setting aspect ratio to "square", but that doesn't seem to be working.

Solving the issue outright would involve altering the source code and I don't believe there are many developers out there interested in putting the necessary time into lr-mame2010. That could change one day though, you never know.

You could use the video_scale_integer = truein retroarch.cfg for mame2010.
You then would have all games (vertical & horizontal) with maximum integer scale game area and correct aspect.
The downside is that you'll get (limited) horizontal black bars at top and bottom of the screen.
