      Edit: Fixed-
just in case anyone else has this problem, i fixed it by using

      sudo rm -rf RetroPie-Setup
      git clone --depth=1 https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup.git

      then following this guide
      https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/Updating-RetroPie

Trying to update retropie on a Raspberry pi 3B, following this
      https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup

      after trying and failing to
      git clone --depth=1 https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup.git
several times, getting "directory not empty" i got it in my head that i should delete the retropie-setup directory so that download would work.

      then i read
      https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/Updating-RetroPie
which leads me to believe i should have ran a file in the retropie-setup folder, which could be updated and ran through that...

now i cant follow the second guide, because some (at least the retropie-setup.sh) files are gone. how do i fix this? please try to explain it simply; im not very good with linux yet. is it possible to force it to let me delete the rest of the files and the directory, and then redownload it with the github command? or do i need to reinstall with SD card, like i did the first time?

@deaththethird Me personally I would just reinstall the most current retropie image from the site and re put it on the card.

i think thats what i'll do, but i remember having a hard time when i did it the first time. my biggest concern are my games and saves... is it possible to pop this in my PC and copy the files out and put them back?

edit: looking for a card reader now.

Im pretty sure you can through sd card not entirely sure, i usually use WinSCp to access files remotely and then just download onto my pc from there.

lol ive done all my file sharing through a usb, it was really simple to do and that was my biggest concern; constantly adding new games was as simple as copying them to the usb, and plugging it into the pie.

it would be faster if i could figure out how to entirely delete and redownload the setup directory, but it wont give me permissions to delete anything there
              EDIT--------------------
i just figured out what i was looking for; i just needed to add sudo before the delete command. idk everything worked, but im going to try git clone --depth=1 https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup.git and see if everything works. i'll edit again to finish up the op if everything turned out good.
