Single Game for MAME
-
I have some old dedicated arcade cabinets - I would like to be able to have the pie boot (preferably with no text or splash screens ) into a single game - the project I am working on now is Tron - and it needs spinner support...I have basically NO programming / Linux skills...any one know a way?
Thanks in advance!

I think you can do that. You might even skip RetroPie and just use like MAME4ALL-Pi or some other standalone emulator if the only game you want to run is Tron.
For MAME4ALL-Pi:
To run MAME simple run the "mame" executable. At the command line "./mame".This runs the GUI frontend by default. To simply run MAME without the GUI enter "./mame {gamerom}" where "{gamerom}" is the game to run.
As for the spinner. I have an Ultimarc spinner that I have never been able to get work properly with RetroPie. I would love to add a spinner for Tempest and few other games that utilize one.

You should be able to get very good spinner support working in AdvanceMAME. I have an Ultimarc U-TRAK trackball and two (2) Groovy Game Gear TurboTwist 2s working perfectly in AdvanceMAME, but it took some messing around with the advmame.rc file to get it setup properly.
Check here:
https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/106/trackball-working-in-mame4all-but-not-advmame/2for the details I have already shared on getting spinner/trackball input working. Once you have done everything in that post, you can tweak the sensitivity to your liking within the advancemame GUI.
I have come to the conclusion that the best way to use these analog inputs for MAME is to use AdvanceMAME as described in the thread I linked above. As much as I enjoy the look and consistency of the Libretro shaders, it's not going to be a one-size-fits-all situation for MAME, at least not right now. Recent updates to the AdvanceMAME code have also made this the emulator of choice for vector games. So, for Tempest, you can now specify the full resolution of your screen and get clean, crisp vector lines AND have full spinner support.
Using multiple MAME emulators isn't a big deal for most of us, and it makes a good case for leveraging the new ARCADE roms folder to keep the front end a little cleaner. It definitely won't be an issue for davecportnoy since you're only planning to launch a single game. Tron is a great one, by the way, to have a dedicated cabinet. Even my 4-player, +trackball, +2 spinners "portable" cocktail cabinet doesn't have EVERYTHING. Namely, I am missing a triggerstick which is key for TRON--few of us take on that kind of joystick, but I really appreciate those of you that do!
Good luck!
