Lost Saved Game and Save State

Hello,
I turned on my system today to continue playing Castlevania on PS1 and my saved profile in game, as well as my saved state, no longer exist.
There were a few events that occurred last night: 1) I updated retropie scripts and version to the most recent, 2) I downloaded the comicbook ES theme and ran it. After succesfully downloaded/updating, I played Castlevania for about an hour and saved at multiple different points. 3) I unplugged the system this morning and moved it to another tv. The system booted up as normal but when I loaded the game, no saved data existed. After rebooting a couple more times, I noticed a message at the top of the screen as the game was loading that read "...insufficient memory..." I checked the card space and it says I have over three gigs available.
Can anyone help me understand what may be the cause of this issue? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
