I've put the SD card into my mac and PC and I only see the one partition which is the small boot partition. Is there anyway of mounting the big rom one as i want to back everything up seeings as I don't seem to be able to run an 'in place' upgrade to the latest version :(

@thefunkygibbon it's a Linux filesystems (ext4) which is described in the documentation you didn't read before posting: https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/First-Installation#install-retropie-image-on-sd-card
you can back up the whole SD described here also in the documentation:
https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Updating-RetroPie
And you can also easily access to contents of your pi from samba shares or ftp as described here also in the documentation:

Hi, yes i know i can access it via samba but transfer of the files via that are really slow on my network, hence wanting to do directly.
Backing up as an image is of no use since I wouldn't be able to restore it without wiping all of the new image that I have to write to the disc with the new build on it.I'm using FUSE-ext2 for Mac and have now mounted the drive and am now copying across.
thanks anyway.
