More applications doesn't mean it's better.
Yes it does. By definition, (assuming there's a manageable way to sort through them) more optional applications for any system is always better. When it comes to software, that is obviously part of what "better" means.
And I do think it absolutely sucks that the PS4 doesn't have the option for someone who wants one to build and distribute a text editor. That's the major reason why I do not buy game consoles which the community hasn't hacked until someone has - because walled gardens without keys for the end users are evil. Any system you do not have the keys to is a system you do not really own.

No, more applications means they need more support. More stuff to fix and implement. As I said before the devs are doing this for FREE, its not their fulltime job. They already have their hands full, yet if we had tons of optional applications. If you don't like RetroPie don't use it simple as that, no one forces you to use it. If you have any ideas just mail the devs and see what they're going to reply.
Haha, seriously? You think the PS4 sucks just because of that? LOL. You do realize it's a gaming console right? Thats like hating cars simply because they cannot fly. LMAO. I cannot see the link between your PS4 argument and the text I highlighted.

Adding more stuff does mean adding more stuff, but just like with all the currently installed stuff, RetroPie devs would only be working on bugs in the setup scripts. They don't make the actual software.
In terms of "complaining" the only thing I've really complained about here is some parts where you can get stuck using RetroPie if you don't have a keyboard. That is a big, obvious problem with RetroPie. I've been thinking of trying to add a virtual keyboard like some PSP homebrews had ten years ago.
Adding more optional packages for general purpose computing is in more of an "it would be nice" category, not a complaint.

Yes.
You do realize it's a gaming console right?
No. There is no valid or reasonable technological distinction between a games console and a general purpose computer. "Games consoles" are just crappy PCs with intentionally crippled operating systems.
Thats like hating cars simply because they cannot fly.
No, that's like hating a specific kind of car which was designed to prevent you from driving it to anywhere that an evil company on the other side of the world doesn't want you going to.
Not only do I fundamentally reject the distinction between "games consoles" and general purpose computers: I don't even believe in the distinction between games and non-game software ultimately. Good software is software that people want to use and like using. Bad software is software that people don't want to use and don't like using. And evil software is software that tries to take control away from the device owner. Period.

The optional applications they have in RetroPie are useful applications, those are relevant for Retro gaming. You suggested apps which have nothing to do with gaming at all. Most apps are ported to run on the ARM processor, someone has to do this. So saying that the devs are not responsible for that is not true at all.
You did complain, read your own post the one with a -4 rep. Now you;re slowly trying to change your "opinion" lol.
A gaming console is meant for gaming and not office applications. You do know that for some reason you still keep talking about the opposite thats why I suspect you trolling. Saying the PS4 sucks because it doesn't have a text writes only shows that you're trolling here.
"No, that's like hating a specific kind of car which was designed to prevent you from driving it to anywhere that an evil company on the other side of the world doesn't want you going to."
Again more irrelevant arguments for you trying to get "yes you;re right" answer. It's not going to happen. You complain about the most ridiculous stuff and call others stupid if they disagree with you, the only one who's looking stupid here is you.
"Not only do I fundamentally reject the distinction between "games consoles" and general purpose computers: I don't even believe in the distinction between games and non-game software ultimately. Again more irrelevant crap. This has 100% nothing to do with everything we posted here. I noticed you doing it multiple times, getting offtopic, talking about irrelevant things just to cover up the arguments you made.
Bad for you the console developers seem to disagree with you. You can either accept it, or go in a corner and get upset because things in life are not like how you want them to be. lol.
LMAO that "evil software" part made me laugh so hard. Especially that "period" stuff you post, like you want to make sure you're 100% right even when you're not. I tell you, you;re not right. Not even close, there is no such thing as evil software. Use what you like, don't like Windows? Use Linux. Don't like consoles? Use a PC.
Getting upset and butt hurt simply because things are not the way you want them to be is one of the most retarded reason to get upset. As if all of this will affect the quality of your life. Get over it and grow some.

The very suggestion seems to have deeply offended you somehow. Get over it.
Most apps are ported to run on the ARM processor, someone has to do this.
Yeah, but there are alot of apps this has already been done for (theres a pretty active scene of Raspberry PI software development) and just needs a setup script to also work on RetroPie, plus maybe a little tweaking to make it work with the gamepads. I was just saying it might be nice to give this a shot. I might even get to doing it myself at some point if no one else takes an interest.
A gaming console is meant for gaming and not office applications.
There is no such thing as a "gaming console" other than a general purpose computer which you happen to be using to run games at the moment.
Saying the PS4 sucks because it doesn't have a text writes only shows that you're trolling here.
That's not quite what I said. I said that the PS4 (and all other mainstream "game consoles" and Apple devices too) suck because they don't allow the option of building a text editor (or any other software) if the device owner wants to build one. Lacking the text editor isn't the problem. Deliberately trying to stop device owners from making one is the problem.
Bad for you the console developers seem to disagree with you.
Manufacturers, not developers. And I boycott them all on principle.

Break it up ladies, break it up.
I think what should happen is to have an addon that allows Web Browsing, Video Streaming, etc.
Like a RetroPie Plus or something of the sorts.

LOL telling me to get over it while you're the one who started to insult people twice who disagreed with him? HAHA, mirroring and projecting behavior. I really think it did offend you when people didn't like your idea so thats why you became emotional and called them stupid.
A "little" tweaking, do you even have coding experience? You seem to talk a lot but you know absolutely nothing at all. It will take the devs a lot of time, while there isn't much demand. You're the first person here on this board who came up with this stuff.
"There is no such thing as a "gaming console" other than a general purpose computer which you happen to be using to run games at the moment."
Again more irrelevant stuff, when will you even stop posting stuff that has nothing to do with the discussion at all? The goal of a gaming system is to play games only, a desktop is a system which is being used for multi purpose tasks.
Yes you said it sucks, when I asked you if the PS4 sucks you literally answered with "Yes". You're falling over your own words, simply because you're getting ignorant lol. All you do is argue and argue because you know your idea is pretty bad. Stop posting nonsense just because you realized that your idea isn't going to get implemented.
The devs work for the manufacturers. Some devs work for sony while others work for independent gaming companies. So the devs are a part of the company who created the device (the manufacturer). They're one group.

I did say the PS4 sucks. But my reason wasn't because it lacks a text editor: my reason was because it tries to lock out the possibility of a text editor. (Or anything else not signed by Sony)

LMAO bro, you just said you didn't now you do. Do you know how ridiculous all of this sound when you scroll up and read everything? Why would the PS4 even have a text editor since 100% of the people buy it just to play games. It would be the most retarded reason to not get a console. I won't buy a car because it doesn't fly (remember that). I won't get a fridge because it doesn't have the option to heat my food... A mindset like that doesn't make sense, if you think it does I wish you good luck in your life.

Video streaming; Kodi + it has controller support.
Web Browsing;there could be many problems with loading up pages, comparability issues. I don't think many people will use it. I believe longtime ago someone created a topic about this.EDIT: here is the topic I was talking about:
https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3410/web-browser-on-emulation-station/3
-
@itsnitro said in Is RetroPie the new xbmc / kodi? Discuss.:

Well as I see it, an optionally installed app would either show up in the "Ports" menu or else maybe what we actually need is just something like "Controller Companion" (virtual keyboard and mouse) for the Pixel desktop environment which is smart enough to scrape the controller config out of RetroPie / EmulationStation. Then you could control the pixel desktop environment with the gamepad, and have access to its entire library of available software in a way that involves the least amount of impact on RetroPie. Such a program might also solve the problem with gamepad support on Minecraft and LOVE as well.

Fine, lets make this real simple so that even you can understand it: Fundamentally, I don't buy game consoles because a game console is a stupid idea and no one should ever buy game consoles. Game consoles rot your brain and are bad for kids. Instead, I buy computers, and also put some games on them. If kids are involved and they're interested in games then I see the point of this as getting them to take an interest in technology that should be leading somewhere with an eductional or artistic benefit. Games should spurr learning and creativity. Game consoles are bad and PCs are good because you can make games on a PC but you can only waste time on a console. Is that simple enough?

LOL. You still keep on insulting me eh. Haha. You're the one here who doesn't understand it bro. Your idea is simply ridiculous. Most gamers here don't even care. And now what you wrote is even hilarious, you have to be either very ignorant, so ignorant that your mind got stuck so you start trowing up random crap at others, or you;re trolling. In a couple posts ago you said a console is simply a PC now you say the opposite. ROFLMAO.
So console games make you stupid and PC games not. Haha, why do you even use RetroPie to play console games? Oh troll, click on that X in the right upper corner.
You're one of the worst trolls I ever seen, you can;t even do it properly. Ok, whats next.
-
@PetroRie You're pretty annoying, and clearly just want to keep this dumb argument going.
@BenMcLean As far as things like a comic book reader or Google Maps goes, I see no problem with those being optional packages if someone who cares about it does the work to port them over, but I can understand why the developers still wouldn't if there was no clamor for it.
As far as lacking controller support for certain tasks, what tasks are you referring to that you can't do way more easily with your computer and ssh? The only thing I have ever used a keyboard for was my wifi password. I also had to use a mouse to scroll down during the controller setup in Kodi, but that might have been the build I was using.
-
@thedeathstar If you want to think I'm annoying thats fine with me. We're here on a public forum, if someone disagrees with you you shouldn't get upset.
If someone comes to a forum of which the majority are all retro console gamers, says console gaming makes you stupid then I really think he's not being serious and is just trolling. If you scroll up you would see that he was provoking since his early posts here.
-
The whole discussion is wildly off topic. Looking back to how it was steered here is a pretty big stretch. Please just agree to disagree and move on. @BenMcLean, if you're looking for a proactive way to move forward, create a pull request and see how it's received. I wouldn't hold out much hope, as interest in all this is pretty low, but running around in circles here certainly won't achieve anything.

Those are the biggest things I had in mind, yeah. The wifi thing wouldn't be quite so bad if it at least managed to remember wifi networks, but what it's doing currently is that if you go connect to a wifi network somewhere else, but then bring your PI back home later, it won't remember your home network at all. Then what makes that even worse is that you need to get in with SSH sometimes to do a safe reboot, and can't do that if there's no wifi, so it's really not safe to run the thing without a network, and since setting up a network requires a keyboard, it's not safe to take it anywhere without a keyboard.
