            It's really easy actually.

            1. Google "old mame artwork" it'll be your very first link. (not sure I'm allowed to post a link or not) download the files you want that match your rom names.

            2. Place the downloaded .zip files into the "artwork" directory located in /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-advmame

            3. Mod your "advmame-0.94.0.rc" file, you'll need to make 2 changes. located in /opt/retropie/configs/mame-advmame
Line #49 display_artwork_bezel no <-------- change to yes

            Line #50 display_artwork_crop yes <----------change to no

These are fantastic and I've downloaded the set a while ago with intention to build a decent set using retroarch.
Although I think there could be an issue in that they are geared for 1080p displays, so wouldn't dynamically adapt to different resolutions.

Not a massive issue, but one to consider if you are making a custom build.

Holy mackerel Batman! That was the Hat Trick! That Google search led me to 'ye olde Mr. Do Artwork site, but to a page that I can't get to from it's website menu on the left. I don't think it's illegal to link to Mr. Do's site because it does not contain any ROMs. It's site w/ OLD artwork that works w/ the Pi's old Mame versions is: http://mrdo.mameworld.info/old_artwork.php

Moderators: I apologize if this is inappropriate. But I really do not see any harm in this.

Anyway, I've been puzzling on this for ages. Didn't realize that apart from the ROMs themselves the artwork format changed through the years too. Thanks for the tip! I now finally have me artwork back. :-)

I love those arcade bezels. Does anyone know some more sources for bezels/overlays for retropie? I am also searching for some nice console bezels (e.g. sega genesis, snes...).

all libretro emulators support overlays (bezels, or anything else you want), so that's pretty much every system. whether anyone has made the bezel is another matter...

@Water-White You can see generic overlays/bezels in use here that also incorporate scanlines.

I'll start some work on incorporating mame bezels with shaders as well.

Here is an example of RetroPie with mame-2003 using overlays and shaders.
Using @davej shaders. and John.Merrit overlays.

@Finhead Does this still work? I've modified the config file and uploaded some artwork and can't get anything to show up. I'm able to get the bezels to work in mame 2003 but not advanceMAME, I'm trying to set it up for tapper since that game doesn't work in mame2003.

Assuming you understand AdvanceMAME is not a libretro core So, if you are trying to use the same technique as in mame2003, none of that applies to AdvanceMAME. You should be able to use the steps @Finhead noted above. You have to use different artwork files (they are the old artwork zip files for pre .107 mame). The artwork zip goes here /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-advmame/artworkor wherever you .rc file is pointing for artwork.

If the old artwork isn't available for the game you want, you could take a crack at making your own. Inside the zip file are images, masks, and the important .art text file which tells Advmame how to setup backgrounds, bezels etc. I understand it is a hassle to get the position correct, but it can be done. Here's another discussion about it.

                                        Hello everyone,

can you add overlay to systems advance - mame or Pi FBA ?

because I tried this method but without success.

                                        thank you for your answers

@mikozzz You can add overlays to AdvanceMAME. You have to use the MAME artwork format from MAME .106 and earlier. This is not well documented, but basically, MAME expects a .art file with the same name as the ROM in the artwork folder . This file is actually a zip archive of the overlay, background, bezel images as needed plus a text file to control how everything gets used. One example is described here under the Other Tricks section, but I don't really know how to build artwork from scratch. I understand the latest version of AdvanceMAME (3.6) does a better job of handling artwork size and position computation.

As for Pi FBA, I have no idea. I don't use it. However, libretro cores (lr-fbalpha) can leverage overlays quite easily. There are MANY threads on the topic as well as utilities for adding them.
