@lilbud with "using save states compulsively" I mean "saving after every hit I give on the last boss and loading if I die". This doesn't count. Saving the state to continue later is acceptable :-)

        @meleu My original statement stands.

I kind of abuse save states

@lilbud I remember the first computer I ever bought, It was a windows 95 machine and the first game i bought for it was Tomb Raider in 1996. That game was so awesome, it was next level in terms of graphics and game play, but at the time it was so hard! I remember doing puzzles where you had to jump from platform to platform, every jump i would make it across would save state, every animal I would kill, save state. Those were the days!

Tomb raider 1 was awesome. It did have some great weapon cheats that helped!

@tmntturtlguy Now this might make you feel old
The first computer I ever used was XP. By the time I could speak, the Gamecube was out.

On save states. I usually save after levels or at checkpoints

Btw, when you completed all of the three first Crash Bandicoot's, did you also felt, that the first one was the hardests and the third was the easiest ?

@dd-indeed Probably the opposite. 1 was the easiest and 3 was the hardest.

The driving controls do not age well, especially the motorcycle levels. Including that one with all the sharp turns and pits.

This was the only way I was able to beat the last stage of Battletoads. NES, off course. :-)

Yea, those are bit difficult, way too stiff and sideway slide all over.

But I find it strange, that you concider the first one the easiest. I've always thought, that the first game has much stiffer controls when comparing to 2 and 3. And it's much more challenging, it's there to take out your life in every single obstacle haha. I've never made it past couple levels. It's the first 3D platformer from Naughty Dog in a era, where they were one of the pioneers for 3D platform games, so obviosly it has rough edges and badly balanced levels. 2 and 3 are piece of cake for me, completed them both couple times and I can play the 3rd game through in couple hours with ease.

@dd-indeed I'm usually really good at platformers. The driving and animal levels are what trip me up. I'm watching my brother play Super Mario World for the first time, he is not good at platformers, he keeps dying on Lemmy's Castle

Well SMW is child's play for me, I played it as a kid and still play, so maybe it's also about, that what have you used to play from early years. But yea, I dunno, it's strange, that you concider Crash 1 easy and for me, it's just too much of a challenge. I'm very sensitive to bad response and stiff controls, those put me out from the game very quickly. And Crash 1 is stiff game, but some people like you, can play it with ease.

GTA 3...boi does that game want to throw my PS2 out the window... Super hard levels, clunky controls, terrible aiming system, no map etc. I like it but it really needs a "remaster".

on my list of games to finish I have :
flashback (not sure I care to play this anymore)
                              Jungle strike
                              Speedball 2
                              Tomb raider 1

Games that ive completed since Jan:
                              sonic 1 (SMS)
                              streets of rage (MD)
                              R-type(SMS)
                              Baku baku (SMS)

when I eventually move home, and make the second version of my cabinet, I may include a CRT so that I can play virtua cop and crypt killer. It has been a while since I played those, I could do virtua cop without even being hit once back in the day.

I have a 27" CRT arcade monitor in my cabinet and I love the authentic look. Unfortunately though, using a CRT with an emulation setup will still not allow you to play light gun games. For that, you'll need a mouse device to act as a light gun. There are actually USB arcade guns specifically made for this purpose, but currently the AdvanceMAME options are the only arcade emulators that support them. I believe @markwkidd is currently working on writing up an issue for the RetroArch project that, when fully resolved, will allow USB arcade guns to work with NES, SNES, Master System, Megadrive/Genesis, SegaCD and all of the MAME cores.

@mediamogul I was looking into the solution that was publicised recently for hacking a light gun with an arduino to make it work on an lcd screen, that way any original light gun can work. It looks very promising, and when its further along the road I may have a go, I think that with the 3d printer I could easily hide all the electronics inside the gun itself rather than strap them to the side as they are currently doing.

But for my saturn games it looks more and more likely that I am going to end up hacking a real saturn into a cabinet.

Very cool. There's also a way to hack the lcd screen itself, but it's not advised as it shortens it's lifespan considerably.

it would definately be easier than using an arduino, wiimote and a white led to emulate the white screen flash of an old crt

It's a USB arcade gun like I mentioned above. Currently, I know it'll work with any of the AdvanceMAME options and it will also work with DOSBox, but unfortunately RetroArch doesn't support these devices yet, which of course means no joy in Muddville for RetroPie's console systems.
