Emulation Station not starting up on start up

Hi @SnipedintheHead can you give us some more information, such as that in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first also do you mean it is loading EmulationStation and only has the RetroPie menu? If so, do you keep your ROMS on a USB drive, or the SD card?
-
Yeah, sorry. Forgot to give the vitals
I am running a B+, and I know I'm not supposed to say "Latest version". But I honestly can't figure out what version I'm on, but I literally just updated today.
I am running it with the power supply that came with the pi (it was a Cana kit I believe).
I'm not getting an error message at all. I think it's as you said -- It's loading Emulationstation, but just the RetroPie menu is coming up. I have the graphic overlay, where all of the emulators would normally be available, but instead it's just the Retropie option.
I have my games loaded on an external harddrive. They have read correctly in the past, and as I said, will read correctly when EmulationStation is restarted.

@SnipedintheHead Hi, I'm having the same issue. I get the Retropie configuration menu, but no menus. I tried restarting Emulation Station with no success. I did not have time to play with it today, but I will let you know if I figure it out.

Awesome, let me know.

@SnipedintheHead ok you say you have an external hard drive? So if you restart emulationstation it works? If that is the case you need to get a powered usb hub to hook your hdd up to. The hard drive doesnt boot fast enough because it is underpowered from the pi.

@edmaul69
Okay I'll look into that. My issue with that is that I've had this setup for well over a year and never had this problem before. Do you know it would suddenly start acting up now? I haven't added anything to my system and have only updated retropie itself. -
@SnipedintheHead not sure. I had this same thing happen. Did you add more roms or anything to the hdd?

@edmaul69
I have not. Tonight I'm going to try to transfer the rooms to my micro SD card and see if that will fix it. -
That looks to have been the problem. I uploaded the games to my micro SD card and it's working fine.

Maybe it is a sign the drive is starting to fail (taking a long time to spin up). I know a number of Toshiba and Hitachi laptop drives have an issue where the grease in the bearings breaks down after a while and turns into a paste that actually slows the drive down until the motor has warmed up a little.
