White flicker on moving through UI after update to 4.2.3
-
@RedBatman Okay. What theme are you running?
-
@AlexMurphy Zoid, Carbon, Turnakafan, pretty much any except for the comic book one.
-
@RedBatman Try increasing or decreasing the VRAM in the menu options. I had this and it sorted itself out after I increased the VRAM to 120. Try it from 70 - 130 in increments of 10, You will need to reboot after you change it each time.
-
@AlexMurphy well I set my VRAM to 200 and that seems sort of fixed it, I still get the white box but after I scroll through all of them once after I get out of a game the white box flicker goes away.
-
@RedBatman I wouldn't recommend 200. It may cause stuttering and glitches. Did you try going below 100?, this actually works on some themes too.
-
If you get the white box, you have not updated from source. The issue has been completely removed from ES.
-
@TMNTturtlguy Yeah, it's definitely sorted my end and as I said I updated from source on Sunday. You will know if you have updated from source if you see the black ES splash screen upon loading.
-
Well I did update from source but I not getting the black emulation station screen though, I'm getting the white one.
-
@RedBatman when you push start to enter the menu, what version does it say at the bottom of the screen?
-
2.1.8RP
-
@RedBatman @AlexMurphy I am running the screensaver build right now, what does your say?
-
@TMNTturtlguy Well I'm about to go to bed. Look I Did select update from source, I don't know why it's not black for me, should I try again from command line tommorow?
-
@RedBatman I would update your setup script first, and then reboot and then update Emulationstation from source.
-
@TMNTturtlguy should I update setup script from command line or within retropie setup?
-
@RedBatman you can do the setup script form within retropie
-
Thanks all for stepping in and so valiantly standing up for the new version. I felt a little bit like Batman, sitting in his cave, and hearing that the villain he just imprisoned had escaped and was causing havoc again. :)
That being said, all changes I've done were only to mitigate and manage the textures better - I can't promise that, under some sort of extreme conditions or lower performance devices (maybe on older Pi hardware?) that it will still take too much time to load the textures and as such the white boxes will show.
Still, the fact that the new build has the black loading screen (great catch!) gives me reassurance that, very likely, you're still running the old build I provided.
Indeed, try to update it from source after exiting emulationstation. What causes the slowdown in compiling isn't anything network related but rather lack of memory, as emulationstation in the background will still take quite a bit. So exiting will help with that. The whole process should take about 30 mins or so.
Were you running any particular emulationstation build beforehand other than the stock one?
Let us know how it goes.

@pjft After updating to new ES the white flicker issue was sorted but now I cannot see any Metadata on my theme.
I am using a customized version of Carbon where the only changes I made were slight adjustments to the Metadata position. Now metadata is not showing at all.
Any idea how to get this sorted?

@NightRune not to step on @pjft toes here, but have you tried another theme to see if your meta data shows up? Depending on when the last time you updated ES, there have been some changes to theme making. It should not affect old themes with standard settings, however your custom setting depending on what you did may no longer work correctly with the new update.
The other thing i just thought of was this: Where did you make the changes to the theme? Did you make a copy of the theme and place it in
home/pi/.emulationstation/themes
? If you made changes to the theme but did not copy it to this location it is very possible and likely that your changes have been overwritten during an update. -

My customized theme is placed in home/pi/.emulationstation/themes .
The only changes i made to original Carbon were slight positional adjustments of the meta data so i can't really understand what is causing this issue.

@TMNTturtlguy Thanks for the reply here - definitely not stepping on anyone's toes!
@NightRune The answers I have won't be especially useful, unfortunately. To be better able to troubleshoot, it'd be good to know what version of ES you were running prior to this last update, as quite a few things were changed on the theming side of things in the past few months. My changes in particular would not have changed anything on the metadata front, so I wouldn't be able to comment on that, but it may certainly have been that your theme was doing something that was working by coincidence and not by design, that has since been fixed.
If you'd want to share the differences between regular Carbon (working) and your version here, I'm sure someone would be able to look into it and easily point you in the right direction. Or just post your changed file here - maybe it'll be something fairly obvious for someone who's been doing themes for long and knows all the changes that took place recently.
My last guess would have been to check in your settings, there's a new option which states "default them view" or something - maybe in the "Other Settings" menu - and confirm it's set to "Automatic" or "Detailed". But given that it seems to work in other themes, I doubt that's the issue.
Best of luck.
